In an apparent move to attract more white male voters, Democrats this week installed State Rep. Mike Smith (D, Marshalltown) as the Iowa House minority leader. That comes after the Democrats’ previous leader in the legislature’s lower chamber, Kevin McCarthy, announced plans to resign.
Analysts were quick to point out that the selection of Smith seems to indicate Democrats are trying to ear support from Anglo voters.
“There’s been a real sense that older white men aren’t having enough leadership in Iowa politics and I think the Democrats are effectively addressing that by picking Smith. I mean, really — his name is Mike Smith, he has a gray mustache, and the man looks great with pleats,” University of Iowa political science professor Kim Rangle said.
Rangle also pointed to analysis which showed slumping support from white men could be a major hurdle for Democrats in next year’s elections.
