IOWA CITY—University of Iowa undergraduates are organizing a protest on Friday to speak out against a planned tuition hike, drawing ire from conservatives on campus.
Student Government Sen. Ricky Strong told The Iowa Iowan last month that students would wait until tuition rates were solidified before complaining about increases.
“We’ll wait until U-Bills are posted next fall and then we’ll bitch and moan about how hard it is to pay for our education,” Strong said at the time. “To change that process would essentially mean doing away with a decades-long tradition of inaction.
But Friday’s protest comes weeks before the State Board of Regents is expected to finalize a proposed 5 percent tuition increase. In response, Strong and other student government officials plan to hold a counter-demonstration, wielding signs reading “Go home, hippies” and “Love it or leave it.”
